Del Mar “By the Sea”. This charming seaside village first settled in the early 1880’s by a railroad official whose wife first gave it its first name inspired by Bayard Taylor’s poem “The Fight of Paso Del Mar” in 1885 before it was officially founded by “Colonel” Jacob Taylor.
The exclusive community is nestled on the coast of the Pacific Ocean with some of the best climates in the country. It is considered Mediterranean-subtropical with warm, dry summers and mild, humid winters, with temperatures averaging 65°F and rarely exceeding 85°F.
Del Mar is distinguished by celebrities who took residency after escaping from Hollywood in the Golden Era. It is still home today to many well known public figures. Del Mar hosts seasonal Thoroughbred horse racing and one very prominent founder of the Turf Club was Bing Crosby, whose famous lyrics live on: “Where the turf meets the surf”. The locals are friendly, unpretentious, and are not shy to greet strangers on the street with a polite “good morning” or “hello”.
Del Mar lends itself to serene picturesque views and white sandy beaches, great walkability, hiking, the world renowned Torrey Pines Golf Course, home to the San Diego County Fair, and esteemed hotel accommodations such as L’Auberge and Hotel Indigo. You can find many shops and cuisines from burgers and brew to Michelin star rated restaurants. Some popular restaurants such as “The Poseidon” are located right on the sand with outdoor dining to watch the waves roll in. Its close proximity to Downtown San Diego and McClellen-Palomar Airport for easy travel access makes it a desirable destination for all.
